Bleeding, Spotting and Irregular Vaginal Bleeding Women's Health Symptoms

Bleeding refers to irregular bleeding for a patient. An example would be if a patient who has had a moderate amount of bleeding during menstruation suddenly experiences a heavy flow. A good rule of thumb, if it is impacting your life in some form it is worth investigating.

A few causes of irregular bleeding include:

  • Spotting
  • Uterine abnormality

Spotting is the bleeding in between regular periods and can happen for a number of reasons:

  • Abnormal or dysfunctional uterine bleeding
  • Irregular shedding of the uterine lining
  • Anovulation
  • Use of a prescription drug
  • Abnormality within the uterus

Other Causes for Irregular Vaginal Bleeding

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Stress
  • Use of blood thinners (anticoagulants)
  • Stopping and starting birth control pills
  • Changes in hormone levels
  • Polyps
  • Inflammation or infection of the cervix (cervicitis)
  • Injury of the vaginal opening from intercourse
  • IUD Intrauterine Device (form of birth control)
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Underactive thyroid (low thyroid function)
  • Cancer or precancer of the cervix, uterus, or (very rarely) fallopian tube
  • Cervical or endometrial biopsy or other procedures

We can help the patient by having a thorough evaluation.

Some treatments include medication such as birth control, dilatation and curettage (D&C), endometrial ablation, NovaSure, and Hysterectomy.

D&C and endometrial ablation are both surgical procedures that remove the lining of the uterus to stop bleeding.

NovaSure is an outpatient procedure that removes the lining of the uterus to stop or reduce bleeding.

Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure which removes part or all of the woman’s uterus. This procedure completely stops bleeding and is treatment for cervical cancer, fibroids, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, and heavy bleeding.
